A UK exhibition demonstration of advanced mechanical fastening systems for sheet metal applications will show the installation of high strength male or female threads in components up to 4.0mm thick.
Profil UK's will highlight its latest high strength mechanical assembly systems at a UK show, including its threaded NBR stud, RSR electrical earthing fastener and SBF ball pin fastener.
Profil's demonstration of advanced mechanical fastening systems for sheet metal applications will focus on the ability to install high strength male or female threads in components up to 4.0mm thick.
The company's extensive range includes pierce nuts and studs in standard and large flange configurations, as well as shouldered, conical, ultra low-profile, high shear, flush fitting and restricted access types.
All are available with M6-M12 threads in a variety of materials, for installation in coated or uncoated materials, high tensile, stainless and sandwich steels, aluminium sections and even magnesium castings.
* NBR threaded stud - the NBR threaded stud builds on the proven abilities of the Profil's plain shank NBR fasteners employed by BMW to provide precise location of front sub-frame assemblies on the new Mini vehicle.
The latest products incorporate a shouldered design for accurate component positioning and a generous thread lead-in for use with high speed nut running equipment.
Profil told manufacturingtalk.com that they are suitable for a wide variety of materials and enable secure, watertight fixings to be achieved with an absolute positional accuracy of +0.2mm.
NBR series fasteners are also ideal for dynamic, static and shock load applications and feature a large flange head for exceptional pull through performance.
* Self-piercing fastener - also on show will be Profil's RSR nut, a self-piercing fastener, which provides high strength location and consistent electrical earthing of components in sheet metal assemblies.
Suitable for panels up to 2.00 mm thick, RSR nuts incorporate a skirted profile that ensures watertight sealing and maximum metal-to-metal contact for dependable electrical performance and high torque resistance.
Electrical conductivity is further enhanced by the fastener's large, flat area of contact and the attachment of terminations using self tapping bolts or screws.
The new fastener also offers substantial piece part cost and installation speed advantages over competitive products, said Profil, such as riveted studs, threaded pegs, captive nuts or welded anchors to provide an ideal solution for vehicle assembly, electrical equipment and domestic appliance applications.
The product's cross section accommodates purpose-designed slip-on plastic cages with four terminal locations.
In addition, the fastener's body ensures a 7.00mm stand-off from the base panel, eliminating the risk of unwanted electrical contact or damage to the finished surface.
* Ball pin fasteners - Profil's SBF ball pin fasteners offer a fast and cost-effective method of achieving high strength pivot points in sheet metal components from 0.8-2.0mm thick.
They feature a cold forged 10mm diameter head, which is compatible with industry-standard gas springs, making them just as suitable for domestic appliance as vehicle tailgate and bonnet applications.
Other special purpose products on display will include Profil's multi-functional RSN 'top hat' nut, which produces reliable, watertight mountings for vehicle after-market roof racks along with significant build quality benefits and cost savings of up to US$0.50 per car.
Similarly, fasteners in Profil's latest corrosion-resistant 'Magni' finish are capable of enduring more than 1000h of salt spray without rusting.
They will be shown at the exhibition, demonstrating the system's suitability for even the most aggressive operating environments.
Feeding and insertion equipment for installing more than 100 fasteners/min, at least an order of magnitude faster than riveted or welded methods, will also be on show on Profil's stand.
Pierce fastening's ability to achieve vibration resistant fixings with high static, dynamic and impact load capabilities will be further underlined by the company's display of applications on the BMW Mini, Mercedes A class, Range-Rover's Discovery and all-new Freelander 2, as well as Ford's Ka, Fiesta and Focus vehicle models.
Collectively, these vehicles employ more than 800 Profil fasteners in their construction in areas ranging from wing mirror retention to safety-critical engine, gearbox and subframe mountings.
